세계 10대 대형교회(7)-미국 하이랜즈 교회

하이랜즈(Highlands)교회는 미국 앨라바마주 버밍엄에 있는 초교파 복음주의 교회다. 매주 평균 6만 명이 예배에 출석한다.

미국 하이랜즈 교회

 

이 교회는 2001년 크리스 호지스(Chris Hodges) 목사가 설립했다. 그는 같은 해 ARC(Association of Related Church)라는 단체를 세워 개척교회 수백 곳을 도왔다.

 

현재 담임목사는 마크 패터스다.

 

하이랜즈 교회는 앨러배마와 조지아 등지에 지교회 24곳을 두고 있다.

이 교회에서 흥미로운 건 중고등부(Motion Students)가 주일에 따로 예배를 드리지 않고 어른들과 함께 예배를 드린다는 점이다. 중고생 정도면 예배 내용을 충분히 이해할 수 있기 때문이라고 한다.

 

대신 매주 수요일 모임을 갖고 소그룹 활동 등에 참여한다. 소그룹은 주제별로 나뉘는데, 온라인 시스템을 통해 원하는 그룹을 선택할 수 있다.

 

또 중학생은 어린이 예배의 보조교사, 고등학생은 정교사로 활동할 수 있다. 중고생의 절반 가량이 교사로 봉사하고 있다. 

 

교회가 운영하는 대학도 있다. 하이랜즈 대학은 교회 봉사자를 위한 훈련기관으로 시작해 정규 대학으로 발전했다.

세계 10대 대형교회를 살펴보면서 흥미로운 점은 거의 대부분 초교파 아니면 오순절교단에 속해 있다는 것이다. 장로교, 감리교, 침례교, 성결교 등이 다수를 차지하는 한국 교회 상황과는 많이 다른 듯하다.

 

미국에서는 최근 어느 교단에도 속하지 않은 초교파 교회가 빠른 성장세를 보이고 있다고 한다. 어느 교회가 급성장하면 지교회를 두면서 사실상 하나의 교단 같은 역할을 하는 것 같다.
